Acer ‘Pixie’

This spirited little tree is similar to 'Bloodgood' and 'Fireglow' but is smaller and displays more deeply divided foliage. Producing the deepest red leaf color of the palmatums, its leaves emerge a pink-red in spring, then darken to a rich maroon-red that holds fast throughout the summer. In autumn, its fiery scarlet color brightens, highlighting the red-black bark that further enhances the show with year-round landscape interest. Its deeply divided leaves display slender, pointed tips and bronze-green undersides. A relatively vigorous plant in its youth, Pixie can grow up to 5 feet in 10 years, but its growth slows as it reaches maturity. Its dense, many-branched, rounded habit creates a beautiful shape in containers, as a landscape specimen, or as a bonsai subject. Pixie produces the richest red color in full sun, with little to no leaf burn, but it is also well-suited to a part shade location, especially in the South.
